Since I’ve been back in China for a year, I’m grateful to say I’ve made a group of friends who share the same idea and interest in art with me. Some of them are animators, some are photographers, and some are filmmakers. We together did a passionate and difficult thing: to build a film festival. Actually, I’m not the first one who had the idea. My friend, Zuolong SHAN, a documentary filmmaker who got into berlinale Talent Campus and Filmex Talent last year, set this film festival up with the help of his professor and schoolmates in Tongji University and Zhejiang University of Technology. So the film festival has been three years old technically. But not until last year had it grown into a mature shape as “Hangzhou Asian Film Festival”. This year the 4th HAFF will be held in October, including many fascinating programs such as the “SHINE ASIA” Shorts competition, in which I am luckily trusted to be in charge of. So, if you happen to know any asian filmmaker who makes good short films (could be doc or narrative, no animation please), ask them to submit to our fest! For details, check HAFF’s website: http://www.haff.asia/

The working team of the fest are all about the same age as me. Some of them quit their well-paid jobs to work for the festival. Some of them leave their hometown to come to Hangzhou for the festival. Why we came together to do a non-profit film festival? This is of course something related to the so-called film dream and social responsibility. Hangzhou is such a big city, ranked the happiest one with beautiful scenery and rich culture in this country. It calls for a film festival. What’s more important is that the local audience calls for a film festival, a real one. That simple. Fortunately we’ve been receiving attentions and supports from different NPOs, media, and commercial organizations domestically and internationally, such as Berlin International Film Festival, who put up our “call-for-entry” notice on their official website, as well as countless filmmakers, film critics and film lovers. Their support means great to us. Yet we are still facing some great difficulties, mainly money. If any American individuals or organizations want to donate or sponsor, we would greatly appreciate that.

I was involved in MUFF back in milwaukee, but this is the first time I feel the pressure of holding a film fest, at the same time having a lot of fun fighting for the mission, and watching short films. Looking forward to October!

I’ve been looking online at artist residencies a lot lately and think some might be very good for having that “alone time” to work but also being close to a great artist community. If anyone is interested here are a couple links artists have given me who made it into residencies. For those of us just out of undergrad and considering grad school I think a residency would be a great intermediary:

Do you ever get the urge to get up and just start running? It hits like a flash and then the power is there. Thats how its been the past couple days. This time though I’m running with paint. I was lucky enough that a friend gave me a Plein Air French Easel when I left Milwaukee. Beginning yesterday I set up outside and just painted. Thats all, and it was great.

For the past two weeks I’ve been sick with a combination of cold and Lyme disease. Finding the tick in my side explained the fatigue and aching all over. With approaching commission deadlines it was no fun. With antibiotics I feel invincible. An invisible euphoria now drives my soul. I’m hooked on Plein Air. I can’t wait to paint all of Pennsylvania!
